Observations from Jets training camp on Thursday.
Going long
Zach Wilson connected with Braxton Berrios on a 45-yard touchdown during a two-minute period. It was a pretty play by Wilson, who rolled to his right and threw the bomb to Berrios, who caught it just in front of the end zone. It was the best throw Wilson has made in Green Bay.
Separate problem
A lot has been made of the Jets’ pass protection woes, and rightfully so, but one overlooked part of it has been the lack of separation by their wide receivers. Wilson does not have anyone to throw to many times and ends up getting sacked.
Caught my eye
Safety Sharrod Neasman made a nice play to intercept an Aaron Rodgers pass during their two-minute drill. The ball went off the hands of receiver Allen Lazard, and Neasman was there to snatch the ball out of the sky. Neasman has been getting a lot of work with Lamarcus Joyner and Ashtyn Davis sidelined.
Zach Wilson Matt Ludtke/APZach Wilson’s day
Wilson got off to a slow start, throwing an interception to Jaire Alexander on his second pass, but heated up later in practice, which was capped off by the touchdown pass to Berrios. Wilson was 10-of-18 on the day with an interception, the long touchdown pass to Berrios and two more touchdown passes in a red-zone period. He was “sacked” five times.
Medical report
The Jets were devastated by injuries on Thursday. DE Carl Lawson had to be carted off the field with a season-ending torn Achilles tendon in his left ankle. DT Sheldon Rankins left practice with a knee injury and is day-to-day. S Zane Lewis suffered a season-ending knee injury. WR Denzel Mims (hip) left practice and is day-to-day. CB Bless Austin did not practice, but it is unclear why. DT Quinnen Williams (foot) did team drills for the first time in training camp.
