Jelani Woods hasn’t played in an official NFL game in 962 days and counting. Maybe the Jets will give him that chance.

tRY IT NOWWoods, a 6-foot-7 tight end who was released Tuesday by the Colts, was one of three players claimed off waivers Wednesday by the Jets.
After he had 25 catches for 312 yards and three touchdowns as a rookie in 2022, Woods missed the next two full seasons due to injuries to his hamstring and toe (surgery). He played 35 total offensive and special teams snaps for the Colts in Saturday’s preseason finale.
“A huge tight end that’s going to help us as a blocker and as a receiver,” head coach Aaron Glenn said.
The Jets also claimed undrafted rookie offensive tackle Esa Pole and third-year linebacker Cam Jones — both of whom were cut by the Chiefs.
Colts tight end Jelani Woods (80) runs past Cincinnati Bengals safety Shaquan Loyal (47) during the second half of a preseason NFL football game, Saturday, Aug. 23, 2025. APPole, who played two years at Chabot College before two at Washington State, is “a developmental guy who I think has a lot of tools,” Glenn said
Jones, who has not missed a game in two seasons and owns a Super Bowl ring, logged 567 snaps on special teams with the Chiefs.
“Looking forward to him getting with these linebackers and really making noise on special teams for us,” Glenn said.
The Jets claimed Cam Jones off waivers from the Chiefs. Getty ImagesTo make room for three new additions — who must remain on the 53-man roster for at least three weeks — the Jets released receiver Tyler Johnson, linebacker Zaire Barnes and offensive lineman Marquis Hayes.
The free-agent signing Johnson, who had 26 receptions last season, returned to the practice squad where he can continue to fight to be a needed complement to Garrett Wilson. As a five-year veteran, Johnson does not have to pass through waivers.

Barnes was a 2023 sixth-round draft pick. The journeyman Hayes was the biggest surprise to make the initial 53-man roster based on his preseason role.
“I like exactly how we handled this process,” Glenn said.
On the flip side of waivers, two ex-Jets are now Browns. CB Jarrick Bernard-Converse — who still had real estate Wednesday in the locker room — was claimed by the Browns, who were No. 2 on the waiver priority list.
WR Malachi Corley, a 2024 third-round pick, went unclaimed because no team was willing to inherit the three years remaining on his contract. But he signed with the Browns practice squad.
QB Adrian Martinez, who lost the third-string battle to undrafted rookie Brady Cook, signed with the 49ers practice squad.
