Former Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly’s five-year battle with cancer is looking up.

According to the Hall of Famer’s wife, Jill Kelly, the five-time Pro Bowler underwent surgery Thursday and is successfully recovering. She posted to Instagram a heartwarming photo of the two holding hands and said the surgical procedure in New York “went well.”

“Never stop holding hands. In sickness and in health. Out of surgery and in recovery,” Kelly’s wife of 22 years wrote on Instagram.

“Still in a lot of pain, but everything went well. Thank GOD! No teeth yet, but 5 implants were inserted into the new bone in Jim’s upper jaw. More technical than I can explain… What matters most is what’s happening in this picture. Never take it for granted! Glory to God!”

The 58-year-old Jim Kelly announced in June 2013 that he was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma, a type of cancer of his upper jaw. Since then, Kelly has undergone numerous surgeries as well as chemotherapy and radiation.
