The Jimmy Garoppolo sweepstakes is still a mystery, but there are two teams that could benefit most from his services: Seahawks and Browns..

During the Seahawks’ loss to the Bears in Thursday’s preseason game, cameras captured a fan holding a sign that read: “We need Jimmy G freaky fast.”

The Seahawks’ current quarterbacks are Geno Smith, Drew Lock and Jacob Eason, after the team traded longtime quarterback Russell Wilson to the Broncos in March.

Coach Pete Carroll told reporters this week that Smith banged his knee. He exited the locker room after Thursday’s 27-11 loss to Chicago with a “big wrap” on his knee.

Lock, meanwhile, was “really sick” with COVID-19, according to Carroll, who said he was “dragging” on the practice field. He can exit the protocol on Sunday, and the thought was that Lock would start in Week 3 if he is healthy.

The idea of bringing in Garoppolo isn’t new for Seattle. In July, the Seahawks had internal discussions about the possibility of Garoppolo playing for them, ESPN reported at the time.

Garoppolo, whose $137.5 million contract with San Francisco expires at the end of 2022, is on the mend after offseason surgery on his throwing shoulder. He’s owed $26.95 million in 2022.

The quarterback remains on the 49ers’ roster, although San Francisco is seeking a trade for Garoppolo. The team has made it clear they are moving forward with 2021 No. 3 overall pick Trey Lance as QB1.

If a Garoppolo-Browns deal were to happen, the quarterback would be a placeholder while Deshaun Watson is suspended.

On Thursday, Watson was handed down an 11-game suspension and $5 million fine in a disciplinary ruling following two dozen allegations of sexual misconduct from massage therapists.

The Browns seem ready to hand the reins to Jacoby Brissett — Garoppolo’s former New England teammate — in Watson’s absence.

“We’re pretty comfortable with how we’re operating right now, knowing that we’ll get Deshaun back after 11 games,” Cleveland coach Kevin Stefanski said Thursday.

However, Garoppolo could be a safe option for the Browns, as Watson hasn’t played since the 2020 season. The Browns also have more cap space than any other team at $48 million.

Former Browns GM Michael Lombardi told TMZ that Cleveland should “go get Garoppolo and save [their] season,” calling it a “no-lose” situation.

“The offense being run in Cleveland is the same terminology as the offense in San Francisco,” Lombardi said. “Garoppolo could walk into Cleveland tomorrow, and within about a week he would be able to execute their offense.

“Look, this notion that Deshaun is just going to come back in Week 12 and all of the sudden magically score, throw four touchdown passes and dominate the NFL, that’s unrealistic. That’s not even remotely accurate.”
