Just when everyone thought he was out, the San Francisco 49ers pulled him back in.

After months of uncertainty, Jimmy Garoppolo has agreed to stay with the 49ers in a backup role behind first-year starter Trey Lance, according to multiple reports. Garoppolo will be paid a fully guaranteed $6.5 million base salary this season, with a chance to make over $16.5 million in incentives if he is forced to start.

That’s down substantially from the $25 million that would have been guaranteed beginning Tuesday, had they not come to the agreement. This was the last year of the five-year, $137.5 million contract that Garoppolo signed in 2018.

The results of this could be quite awkward as Garoppolo led the 49ers to the NFC Championship game last season, a tough expectation for the young Lance to replicate.

Garoppolo has a career 33-14 record, including an impressive 13-3 record in 2019. That season could have been the final straw in straining this relationship as he struggled in the Super Bowl against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Garoppolo threw for 3,810 yards and 20 touchdowns in 17 games as a starter last season and could still be a trade candidate as the season continues and injuries pile up.
