The 49ers said all the right things publicly about Trey Lance’s reaction to Jimmy Garoppolo’s contract restructuring, but in private, he may not have been quite as happy.
The news was “complicated” for Lance to take, tweeted NFL Network’s Albert Breer. That came after Breer said Lance was “a little annoyed” — which he walked back in a later tweet.
“Yeah, full disclosure, my wording might’ve been a little presumptive there,” Breer wrote. “I’m not climbing in the guy’s head. What I heard was it was complicated news to take, as you’d expect it would be, and again that was just in the immediate aftermath.
“He’ll be fine.”
The assumption of nearly everyone in football was that Garoppolo would be traded ahead of the season after losing the starting job to Lance. But the Niners failed to find a satisfactory deal. So last week, the two sides reworked Garoppolo’s deal to a one-year contract with a guaranteed $6.5 million.
Even Garoppolo expressed surprise about the way things transpired, saying returning “wasn’t on my mind” when he spoke to reporters about the deal.
Trey Lance had a ‘complicated’ reaction to Jimmy Garoppolo’s return. AP PhotoNiners coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters that Lance was happy to have Garoppolo back, and had learned from him last season.
“Trey actually likes having Jimmy in the building,” Shanahan said. “Trey was very grateful how Jimmy was to him last year and we feel very strongly from the two people, that Jimmy will give that back to Trey this year.”
Lance is the team’s unquestioned starter, but Garoppolo’s presence could put a bit more pressure on him should he begin to struggle.
Jimmy Garoppolo’s return to the 49ers caught almost everyone by surprise. AP PhotoAn eventual trade, though, could still be in play as the season unfolds, particularly if other quarterbacks get hurt and Garoppolo is seen as a potential replacement.
The 49ers open their season against the Bears on Sunday.
