This wasn’t the start the 49ers had hoped for.

Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo had the first interception of Super Bowl 2020, getting picked off by Chiefs cornerback Bashaud Breeland in the second quarter. The turnover turned into a field-goal drive for Kansas City, extending their lead 10-3.

The 49ers soon struck back with a touchdown from fullback Kyle Juszczyk, evening the score at 10-10.

Garoppolo’s play naturally raised eyebrows — and not just because he kept his eyes closed.

It’s the second interception ever thrown by a 49ers quarterback in the Super Bowl in seven appearances. In 2012, then-quarterback Colin Kaepernick threw a pick against the Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl XLVII.
