President Joe Biden said Wednesday that he spoke to the parents of Bills safety Damar Hamlin after he went into cardiac arrest Monday night during a game against the Bengals.

“I spoke with his mother and father at length,” Biden said.

Hamlin, 24, collapsed during the first quarter after a collision with Bengals receiver Tee Higgins. Medical personnel resuscitated Hamlin on the field and he was transported to University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he remained in critical condition in the ICU as of Wednesday evening. The Bills-Bengals game was postponed and will not resume this week.

Jordon Rooney, Hamlin’s friend and marketing representative, told ESPN on Wednesday morning that doctors received “promising readings” on Hamlin. Rooney later told NFL Network that “things are really in a positive direction.”

The harrowing incident has put a renewed focus on the violence of football. Biden said he did not think the NFL was getting too dangerous.

“No. Look, the idea that you’re going to have — look, you got guys that are 6-foot-8, 340 pounds running a 4.8 40. I mean, you know, you hit somebody with that kind of force — now, that’s not what happened here,” Biden said.

“But I just think it’s a — I don’t know how you avoid it. I don’t — I think working like hell on the helmets and the concussion protocols — that all makes a lot of sense. But it’s — you know, it is dangerous. You got to just acknowledge it.”
