Four days and three practices is not much, but that is how long Joe Looney spent with the Giants before he decided to call it quits.
Looney, 30, told the Giants on Wednesday that his body was not responding the way he wanted and needed it to, and that he had too much respect for the team and the game to remain in training camp. So, just like that, the Giants lost a player who had added depth and experience to their offensive line.
Joe Looney Corey SipkinLooney was attractive to the Giants because in his nine-year career, he had played in 104 games, including 42 starts, mostly at center, but also at right and left guard. He started 12 games for the Cowboys in 2020. With the Giants, he would have provided depth at center behind Nick Gates and competition at guard for Shane Lemieux (currently sidelined with a knee injury) and Will Hernandez.
Looney became the third player to leave the Giants since training camp began last week, joining tight end Kelvin Benjamin and linebacker Todd Davis.
The timing of Looney’s departure is interesting. He exited one day after head coach Joe Judge put his team through conditioning running and push-ups following a brawl that erupted near the end of Tuesday’s practice.
Asked if Looney might have opted out after Judge handed out the punishment, offensive tackle Nate Solder said, “He’s a long-time veteran, I don’t think one time of exercise would change his decision.’’
It looks as if the hamstring injury that sent WR Kenny Golladay walking off the field Tuesday before the end of practice is not a serious setback.
The injury is more a tweak than a strain, according to a source. Golladay will be monitored and certainly will be held out for a bit as a precaution.
Golladay has a history with this particular injury. He missed five games as a rookie with the Lions in 2017 with a strained hamstring and sat out the first two games last season with the same issue.
“I would say in terms of a worst-case scenario I think we kind of avoided that in terms of dealing with it,’’ Judge said. “We’ll see what the timetable looks like.’’
With their depth dwindling at receiver, the Giants signed Andy Jones, who previously played for the Lions and Dolphins, but has not appeared in an NFL game since 2018. Jones, in 11 career games, has 11 receptions for 80 yards and one touchdown. He was cut in late June by the 49ers.
The need for a new target arose because Golladay will need to take some time off because of his hamstring injury, Austin Mack is also dealing with a hamstring issue and Derrick Dillon was placed on injured reserve.
Also signed: TE Tommy Stevens, a former quarterback at Mississippi State and Penn State. … RB Mike Weber was placed on injured reserve with a hip flexor.
