Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence isn’t everyone’s No. 1 in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Retired Washington legend Joe Theismann fawned over Zach Wilson and told CBS Sports he would prefer the BYU product over Lawrence.

“Honestly, yes. [It’s] really close. We are sort of splitting hairs here a little bit but I would [take Wilson over Lawrence] as a matter of fact,” Theismann said on Thursday.

“I just think coming into this particular draft, Zach checks all of the boxes for me. Personally, my choice. My guy.”

Wilson, 21, has been the Cougars’ starting quarterback for nearly three seasons, during which time he has completed 67.6 percent of his passes for 7,652 yards, 56 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. His final season as a true junior was by far his best to date, starting all 12 games and completing 73.5 percent of his passes for 3,692 yards and 33 touchdowns to three interceptions. He is also highly mobile and had 642 rushing yards on 212 attempts for 15 touchdowns, ten of which came in the 2020 season.

“I think Zach, obviously, I just love the way he throws the football. It is hard to teach. We have seen people learn to perfect it a little bit,” Theismann said. “He has all the skills; he has a live arm, he has a strong arm, he can put touch on it, he can gun it. He is 6-foot-3, he is not a small guy. He moves around with great athleticism. I think, to me, watching him play quarterback, he looks really ready.”

Theismann, 71, spent 12 seasons as the then-Washington Redskins’ signal-caller after beginning his career with the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts. He is a two-time Pro Bowler and earned first-team All-Pro honors and NFL MVP award in 1983, the same year he led Washington to a win in Super Bowl 17.

The New Jersey native lauded the other top quarterback prospects, including Lawrence — whom most believe will be selected by the Jaguars at No. 1 overall — as well as Ohio State’s Justin Fields and Alabama’s Mac Jones. He noted, however, that all three were on teams with a high degree of talent, which boosted their values.

“Trevor Lawrence is certainly a big kid who can run well, surrounded by terrific talent at Clemson. It is a little bit like Mac Jones at Alabama. They are surrounded by terrific talent and sometimes you look at that talent and say ‘did that help the position a lot,'” Theismann said. “I think in the case of Trevor, being a young guy and as strong and physical as he is, he will have a great opportunity to learn, as will Mac and all the young guys, Justin Fields, as well, out of Ohio State.”

Theismann isn’t the only Super Bowl-winning quarterback to suggest that Lawrence shouldn’t be the first player off the board. Packers legend Brett Favre told TMZ recently that he thinks Jacksonville should forgo the Clemson QB in favor of a different position entirely.

“I would take (Alabama receiver) DeVonta Smith,” Favre said of the Heisman-winner. “The last two games I’ve watched this guy play, I mean, I’m blown away with how good — knowing that teams know that he’s going to get the ball — and he dominates. I think you go with a guy like that.”

If the Jaguars were to theoretically go rogue and select Wilson (or Smith), the Jets would then have a chance at Lawrence with the No. 2 pick. Theismann thinks, however, that Jacksonville will ultimately take Lawrence, leaving his No. 1 available for Joe Douglas and Jets.

“It looks like the Jets may be the ones taking [Wilson] at two, which potentially puts Sam Darnold on the market or somewhere else,” he added.
