The Ravens and Browns arguably gave us the best NFL game of the 2020 season, a Monday night thriller in which Baltimore prevailed 47-42. The game is best remembered for its climactic moment, when Lamar Jackson re-emerged from the locker room to throw a go-ahead touchdown pass on fourth down after suffering, uh, “cramping.”
His return came one play after backup quarterback Trace McSorley injured his knee and was out for the game.
Ravens coach John Harbaugh recalled the epic game during a discussion with high school coaches on Hudl, saying that had Jackson not been able to return the game during that fourth down, he had two alternate plans: either put wide receiver Willie Snead in at quarterback, or try an extremely long field goal with Justin Tucker.
“Tucker, who always runs right by me when he wants to kick a field goal, comes clicking by me, spins around and looks at me like, ‘Am I kicking the field goal?’” Harbaugh said. “And I look at him and I go, ‘It’s 68 yards.’ He goes, ‘Yeah.’
“I go, ‘Can you make it?’ And I think it might be a good idea. He looks at me and he says, ‘I think I’ve got a better chance than Willie.’ And I’m like, ‘I think you might be right.’”
John Harbaugh almost sent Justin Tucker out for a ridiculous field goal before Lamar Jackson’s fourth-down heroics against the Browns. Getty ImagesMany on the internet have speculated that Jackson’s exit had more to do with a bathroom emergency more than cramping, though Jackson has strongly spoken out against that theory.
His touchdown pass was thrown from the 44-yard line, so it actually would have only been a 61-yard field goal. But there were fairly high winds during the game, and the thought showed an intense confidence in Tucker, one of the game’s all-time best kickers.
Luckily, Jackson emerged from the tunnel and threw the heroic touchdown pass to Marquise Brown to go ahead, 42-35. The Browns then drove down the field and Baker Mayfield threw a touchdown pass of his own to tie it, but Tucker had his time to shine at the two-second mark, nailing a 55-yard attempt through the uprights for the win.
