Daniel Jones USA TODAY Sports via Reuters ConThe Giants are allowing retained general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll to search far and wide to find next year’s starting quarterback — with the hope of addressing the position for the long term.
“That’s obviously the No. 1 issue for us going into this offseason — to find our quarterback of the future,” co-owner John Mara said Monday. “Whether that be via the draft or acquiring a veteran, it’s going to be up to them to decide, ultimately.”
But Mara notably did not commit to keeping Schoen and Daboll in their jobs for two more seasons.
Shedeur Sanders USA TODAY Sports via Reuters ConThat leaves the Giants open to drafting a quarterback like Sanders or Ward with the No. 3 pick, making sweeping organizational changes after his rookie season and restarting the cycle of failure that stunted Daniel Jones’ development after his promising rookie season under head coach Pat Shurmur.
Mara, who infamously said in 2022 that the Giants had done everything possible to “screw up” Jones, is trying to be more patient.
“Once you solve the quarterback issue,” Mara said, “I think a lot of these other things will improve as well.”
Cam Ward (1) Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn ImagesSchoen and Daboll — hired three years ago in large part for their assistant roles in helping the Bills draft and develop 2024 MVP candidate Josh Allen — have a spotty record on their Giants quarterback evaluations.
The regime extended Jones on a first-guessable four-year, $160 million contract, passed on drafting Michael Penix Jr. (Falcons) and Bo Nix (Broncos) in 2024 before both showed varied levels of promise as rookies, signed Drew Lock to be their backup to Jones after angering Tyrod Taylor, bypassed Lock for Tommy DeVito when the time was needed to replace Jones, and then went back to Lock over DeVito.
Mara did not absolve Schoen and Daboll of their Jones mistake but admitted he “approved it,” too.

“I wouldn’t change what we did,” Schoen said. “I wish it would have worked out with Daniel, but it didn’t. But it doesn’t deter me from taking one and having a lot of faith in the people that are in place to develop whoever it is.”
Drafting Sanders or Ward to fill the vacancy would’ve been much easier if the Giants lost in Week 17 to the Colts and had the No. 1 overall pick.
Lock is an unrestricted free agent and DeVito is an exclusive rights free agent, so the Giants have no quarterbacks on the roster. Daboll will begin scouting the college class this week.
“We will pursue anything we think can make us better,” Daboll said. “The NFL is usually a one-year deal, anyway. So, we’ll do everything we can do to be much better than we were this year.”
