Ernie Accorsi is back helping make key decisions for the Giants.

The former Giants general manager has been hired by John Mara to serve as a consultant and will team with Mara to find the replacement for Jerry Reese, who was fired Monday along with head coach Ben McAdoo. It is sure to be a bittersweet assignment for Accorsi, who back in 2007 strongly advocated that Reese replace him as the Giants’ general manager.

Accorsi, 76, is no stranger to this role. He retired following the 2006 season but has remained active in the NFL, working as a consultant to help identify strong candidates for head coach or general manager for the Lions, Bears and Panthers. Accorsi’s recommendation helped Dave Gettleman land the GM job with the Panthers, and Gettleman built a Super Bowl team. Gettleman, no longer employed by the Panthers, remains close to Accorsi and, as a popular former Giants personnel executive, could be a factor in this latest hire for the Giants.

Mara and Accorsi worked closely together in the 2004 job search that resulted in Tom Coughlin’s hiring as head coach.
