The Mac Jones smoke has given way to the Justin Fields embers.

For the first time since the 49ers traded up to the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Fields is the betting favorite to be their selection, currently at -140 on BetMGM. Jones, who has long been speculated to be the target, is now listed at +110.

After San Francisco traded up in the draft, sending two future first-round picks to the Dolphins, speculation ran rampant that they would select Jones out of Alabama. San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan and GM John Lynch chose to attend Jones’ pro day on the same day as Fields’, and insider rumblings predicted Jones to the 49ers for weeks.

It appears, however, things are starting to shift. 49ers brass attended Fields’ second pro day earlier in the week, where the Ohio State QB put on a show and was photographed smiling with Shanahan afterwards. Mock drafts are now penciling Fields in as the pick, and the betting markets have responded.

Fields was considered to be the No. 2 quarterback prospect throughout the college season behind Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence, but has seemingly lost some luster in the offseason as Jones and BYU’s Zach Wilson rose up draft boards. It would be a shock if Wilson did not go to the Jets with the No. 2 pick.

In the pre-draft process, Fields has faced questions about his work ethic and ability to throw past his first read, which those in the know have labeled as ridiculous.

If we operate under the assumption that Vegas knows all, the 49ers appear to be adjusting their plan.
