Justin Jefferson tried to say something nice about his former college quarterback – and ended up burying his current one in the process.
On Tuesday’s episode of “The Herd” with Colin Cowherd, the Vikings star was asked to compare Joe Burrow, the man who threw him passes at LSU, to Kirk Cousins, the man currently throwing him passes in Minnesota. What was intended to be a simple comparison ended up sounding a lot more harsh.
“The thing about Joe that’s a little bit different, I feel like Joe has a little bit more swagger,” Jefferson said. “He has that confidence on the field, he’s not scared to get hit. I feel like as a quarterback, that’s a big trait to have.”
Cowherd went on to ask Jefferson about the Vikings’ interest in Justin Fields, as the team was reportedly ready to draft the Ohio State quarterback if he fell to them at No. 14 in the 2021 NFL Draft. Fields ended up going three picks earlier to the division rival Bears, who moved up in the draft in a trade with the Giants.
When asked if the rumored interest in Fields surprised him, Jefferson said it did not.
“We have to build on,” Jefferson said. “For after Kirk, or whatever the case may be. Having Justin Fields brings a little more pressure to other teams by having a dominant quarterback like he is.”

They did draft Texas A&M quarterback Kellen Mond in the third round, whose mobility and excellent arm strength give Minnesota’s quarterback room an element they didn’t necessarily have beforehand.
Jefferson had a standout rookie season with Cousins under center, logging 1,400 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. He did praise his quarterback’s accuracy earlier in the segment as he continued to compare him with Burrow.
“[Cousins and Burrow] don’t have the strongest arms, but they’re going to get it to you exactly where you need them to throw it,” he said.
