Kenny Pickett apparently thought the media didn’t want to hear from a backup quarterback.
Pickett was not present for the Steelers’ final media availabilities after their season-ending wild card loss — in which he did not play — to the Bills on Monday, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
His no-show raises even more questions about his future with the organization that drafted him in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin attempted to quell those concerns Thursday when he said Pickett will be the team’s top quarterback in 2024, per the Athletic, although plans can obviously change.
Once considered the Steelers’ heir apparent to Ben Roethlisberger, Pickett was Wally Pipp’d this season by Mason Rudolph, who started the playoff loss.
Rudolph took control of the starting gig in Week 15 and led the Steelers to three straight wins and a playoff berth before their season ended in a 31-17 loss to the Bills.
Kenny Pickett was benched down the stretch. Getty ImagesPickett said he was healthy enough to return in Week 17 against the Seahawks after recovering from an ankle injury, but coach Mike Tomlin rode with Rudolph down the stretch.
The Steelers now enter the offseason not knowing if they have a franchise quarterback.
Pickett has underwhelmed in his two seasons leading the team, throwing for fewer than 2,500 yards in each season while missing nine games over his first two years.
He’s thrown just 13 touchdowns and also tossed 13 interceptions in his 25 career starts, with the touchdowns sticking out in an era where quarterbacks light up the scoreboards.
Mason Rudolph started the wild card loss. USA TODAY Sports via Reuters ConPickett threw for 2,070 yards with six touchdowns and four interceptions in 12 games this season, while adding one rushing score.
Rudolph, a third-round pick in 2018, was the team’s third-string quarterback entering the season but he played well down the stretch.
He threw for 229 yards, along with two touchdowns and one interception in Monday’s loss.
It’s possible Pickett could ask for a trade this offseason, and the Steelers could bring Rudolph, an impending free agent, or another veteran to challenge Pickett in camp.
No matter the route, Steelers fans won’t know how Pickett feels until the team’s next organized media availability, like OTAs.
