The Patriots are capping off what’s been a challenging offseason with a cheesy Mac Jones comparison.

Days after New England closed out the preseason with a 23-6 loss to the Raiders, Keyshawn Johnson offered a unique take on second-year Patriots quarterback Mac Jones, who threw for 71 yards with zero touchdowns and one interception in Friday’s game.

“Mac Jones this preseason, to me, looked like bad macaroni and cheese with breadcrumbs on top,” the Super Bowl champ, 50, said Monday on ESPN’s “Keyshawn, JWill & Max.”

“For whatever reason, and I don’t know if it’s Matt Patricia and Joe Judge, or it’s just the offensive line, or it’s the playcalling or he’s not seeing it clean, but he looks like a guy that belongs in the fourth round [as] opposed to the guy that we saw last year, help his team, at times, get into the playoffs. He look like a totally different dude this preseason, I don’t know what it is. Like I said, he look like a bad pan of macaroni and cheese.”

Jones, the Patriots’ first-round pick in 2021, helped lead New England to a playoff appearance last season, when the 23-year-old quarterback worked with then-offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.

This year, the new-look Patriots offense is without McDaniels, who is now head coach of the Raiders. Instead, Patricia and Judge, who previously held the defensive and special teams coordinator positions, respectively, are taking the reins, sans the actual offensive coordinator title.

Although this offseason hasn’t been without some highly documented growing pains, head coach Bill Belichick previously lauded Jones’ development from last year to now.

“Everyone recognizes how well he prepares and how much further along he [is] than a year ago,” Belichick said in July, via NBC Sports Boston’s Tom Curran.

Through 17 regular-season games last season, Jones threw for 3,801 yards and 22 touchdowns against 13 interceptions.

He and the Patriots will visit the Dolphins on Sunday, Sept. 11, when they open the season in Miami.
