There was a good news/bad news element to the record-setting day Jets kicker Jason Myers delivered in the Jets’ 42-34 win over the Colts on Sunday at MetLife Stadium.
Most importantly and most impressively, Myers set a franchise record by connecting on all seven field-goal attempts in the game, tying an NFL record. Three of his kicks were from 45 or more yards, and his total of 274 yards on the seven successful field goals set an NFL record.
All good for Myers, whom the Jets signed in August with their kicking situation very much in flux.
But bad for the Jets’ offense, because seven field goals means seven times the offense failed to score touchdowns.
Jets receiver Jermaine Kearse laughed when asked a question about the performance of Myers, the Marist product who kicked in Jacksonville from 2015 to last season, when he was released six games into the season.
“In those situations, we got turnovers and a short field to work with and obviously you want to get touchdowns,’’ Kearse said. “That’s the goal. But things didn’t happen that way and Jason stepped in and did a great job of kicking for us and getting us points.
“Having a guy like Jason, you know you can lean on him, and congrats to him. I think that was a record. It’s huge. Everyone had a part in this win and that’s something that we like.’’
Myers became only the sixth kicker in NFL history to make seven field goals in a game. The 24 points he accounted for was the second-most points by a kicker in NFL history, behind the late Rob Bironas’ 26.
When it was over, Myers had no idea of any of the history he’d made.
“I think that’s the most attempts I’ve ever had period, let alone make,’’ he said. “It’s always fun when you get a lot of work out there. You just go a kick at a time and get home and see what happens. It felt good. It was a close game, so we needed them all. So being able to help out that way was important to me.’’
Jason MyersAPAsked if he felt like he was in a zone, Myers said: “There are always days when you’re kind of fighting it, but I felt good today. Tom [Hennessy, the long snapper] and Lach [holder Lachlan Edwards] did a great job, and the big boys up front gave me all day, so they made my job pretty easy.”
Asked if he felt pressure as the game entered the fourth quarter and the Colts were mounting a comeback, Myers said: “There’s pressure, but you’ve got to take it one moment at a time. You’ve just got to keep making them.”
Myers was 26-of-30 on field goals for the Jaguars in 2015, 27-of-45 in 2016 and 11-of-15 last season before being released. After Sunday, he’s 16-of-17 for the Jets through six games.
“We knew he had a strong leg,” coach Todd Bowles said. “Sometimes, kickers run their course at their place and need a new beginning. He’s gotten off to a great start with us, and he had a heck of a ballgame.”
