Kemba Walker has been blanked for two straight games for the first time in his career, but his starting backcourt mate with the Knicks, Evan Fournier, continues his recent uptick from the outside.
Fournier nailed at least eight 3-pointers for the second time this season and scored 30 points despite the Knicks’ sixth loss in seven games Wednesday night against Memphis at the Garden.
The 29-year-old Frenchman has been wildly inconsistent for much of his first season in New York, but Fournier is shooting 50 percent from 3-point range (52-for-104) over nearly a full month since hitting 10 3s against Boston on Jan. 6.
“Honestly, in every season you have stretches where you can’t make a shot and stretches where you can’t miss,” Fournier said after Wednesday’s game. “As far as shooting goes, it’s mental, really. You have to get into a space mentally where nothing affects you and you play with a lot of confidence. And don’t let anything get to your head and just do what you’ve always done in your career in practices and all that.
“As far as shooting right now, I’m feeling pretty good.”
Evan Fournier is shooting 50 percent from three since January 6. Charles Wenzelberg/New York PostFournier, who has upped his overall shooting percentage from long distance this season to 40.3, joined J.R. Smith as the only Knicks to record multiple games with at least 30 points and eight or more 3-pointers made over the team’s first 55 games of a season.
“He is in a good rhythm right now and his teammates are doing a good job in searching him out, which I think is important,” Tom Thibodeau said of Fournier, who is averaging 24.3 points over his past three appearances. “I like the way he is playing a lot. I think it creates space and opens up the floor for everyone. It’s been good and he’s got to keep him going.”
With the Knicks starting a five-game western trip Saturday in Los Angeles, LeBron James was listed as doubtful for the Lakers’ game Thursday night against the Clippers after missing the previous four with a sore left knee.
With eight blocked shots Wednesday night, Mitchell Robinson joined Patrick Ewing and Marvin Webster as the only Knicks to ever swat at least that many in one game multiple times. Robinson also became the first Knick since Ewing in 1991 to record at least 10 points, 10 rebounds and eight blocks in one game.
