Rex Ryan may have inadvertently helped create this monster in Baltimore.
His rage firing of current Ravens offensive coordinator Greg Roman years ago, as noted by Smart Football’s Chris B. Brown, paved the way for the unbelievable season Lamar Jackson is having. Roman was Ryan’s offensive coordinator with the Bills in 2016. Two games into the year, however, Ryan fired Roman after a loss to the Jets in which his offense scored 31 points.
If Ryan doesn’t make that move, Roman may not become the tight ends coach for the Ravens and doesn’t wind up getting promoted to offensive coordinator to run the Lamar Jackson Show. Together, the two have thrived, helping the Ravens go 9-2 this year as Jackson has become an MVP favorite.
The 22-year-old Jackson, who was the last pick in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft, has 2,427 yards passing with 24 touchdowns and five interceptions, and he’s rushed for 876 yards and six scores.
Ryan, the former Bills and Jets head coach, has been impressed by him.
“He’s the most special player I’ve ever seen in the NFL,” Ryan, a former Ravens defensive coordinator, said on ESPN earlier this month.
Jackson would probably not be this special without Roman guiding him. He can thank Ryan for that.
