Landon Collins went from Giants stalwart to voicing their fans’ biggest fear.

Collins, in an interview with NJ.com, said he believes the Redskins got the best quarterback in the NFL draft and that decision will haunt the Giants for years. The Giants drafted Duke quarterback Daniel Jones at No. 6, while Heisman finalist Dwayne Haskins slipped to Collins’ Redskins at No. 15.

“Honestly, I thought the Giants were going to take him,” Collins told the website of the Ohio State star. “It slipped into our hands. I was like, ‘Wow, we got the best quarterback. We stole the best quarterback in the draft. Awesome.’”

Not putting the franchise tag on Collins was the first of several surprising decisions Giants general manager Dave Gettleman made this offseason. The Pro Bowl safety then quickly signed a six-year, $84 million deal with the rival Redskins in March.

The choice between Haskins and Jones is one that will be dissected for years with the quarterbacks in the same division. The Giants’ selection on Jones has been harshly criticized, particularly because they took him at No. 6 and did not wait till their second first-round pick at No. 17.

Gettleman said he knew two teams would have taken Jones before that 17th pick. The Redskins and Broncos were the teams Gettleman reportedly feared. Haskins is expected to compete for the Redskins’ starting job, while Jones will be sitting behind Eli Manning at least at the start of his rookie season.

“Great guy, great quarterback, humble guy, down to earth, ready to ball,” Collins, who is plotting his own Giants revenge tour, said of Haskins.

“Ready to tear up the Giants defense for the next five years and continue on from there. I think we’re going to go get one (a Super Bowl) — or a couple of them.”
