A day after calling Eli Apple a “cancer” — and mere hours after doubling down on his stunning public rebuke — Landon Collins has taken his foot off the gas pedal that was driving Apple out of town.
On Wednesday afternoon the Giants safety released a statement of apology and support for the troubled cornerback.
“I met with Coach Spags and Eli this morning and I apologized for the things I said yesterday,” Collins said on Twitter. “I never stop supporting my brother/teammate Eli and the rest of my teammates as we move forward. Just want him to know I’m always here for him 💯@EliApple13”
Collins went on ESPN NY radio Tuesday and said Apple, the 2016 first-round pick who has taken a plunge this season, should be let go in the offseason, saying he is a “cancer” who needs to grow up. Wednesday morning ESPN reported that Collins stood by his comments, saying Apple “has checked out.”
Apple checked in to Sunday’s game in Arizona just seven times — all on special teams — and was a healthy scratch for four straight games earlier this year. He has been perhaps the most controversial Giant in a disastrous 2-13 season and has had real off-the-field concerns on his mind, including his mother undergoing brain surgery.
