Jets fans have not had much to be happy about for a long time. That changes with the hiring of Robert Saleh as their new head coach. He led a top-five defense without most of his starters on the field in 2020. The year prior he led the second-best defense in the NFL to a Super Bowl appearance. He’s enthusiastic and has a “CEO-like” demeanor, something this franchise has desperately needed. Saleh is a first-time head coach, and with that comes uncertainty, but from everything we have heard, Jets fans should be ecstatic with the hire.
To break down the Saleh hiring and what it means for the Jets, we bring you an emergency “Gang’s All Here” podcast with Brian Costello and me.

“Gang’s All Here” Opening Segment with Jake & Coz:
- Jets got this right. Track record with the 49ers, winning a Super Bowl as a coach with the Seahawks, working his way up. Saleh gets his players pumped.
- You don’t know yet what he will be. Fans were excited with the Todd Bowles hire and that did not work out. Known for developing players. All about players you have. Jets don’t have many.
- Key for him is scheme and leadership. Coz thinks clapping on sidelines and pumping guys up is not a huge deal.
- Richard Sherman, Russell Wilson, Kyle Shanahan and many others praising Saleh. Under the Pete Carroll coaching tree.
- Five-year contract gives him some time. He should get a long honeymoon. He is Lebanese. 49ers get two third-round draft picks for the Jets hiring a minority head coach. Fans would have been mad if they hired Doug Pederson. Mike LaFleur will come with Saleh as his offensive coordinator.
- Where do Jets go at QB? Any chance at Deshaun Watson? Pipe dream.
Mark Cannizzaro Segment: NY Post longtime football columnist
- Jets fans have wanted a young guy that could turn into the next Sean McVay. Seems like they made the right hire here.
- Was high on him and friends in San Francisco rave about him. He’s incredibly well-rounded. Comes from the basement of NFL circles. Blue collar guy coming to a blue collar New York City.
- Hiring Saleh could mean Sam Darnold stays. Maybe the Jets trade the second pick for a haul, build the roster and give Darnold one more season. Not a big fan of jumping at a QB with the second pick if they are not too high on them.
