Marcus Maye wants a long-term deal from the Jets, but for now, he has accepted the franchise tag the team put on him. 

His agent confirmed Saturday that Maye will sign the tag, which pays him $10.6 million for the 2021 season.

The Jets and Maye have until July 15 to work out a long-term deal, and if they do not, Maye plays the season on the tag.

There is no doubt the 28-year-old Maye took notice of how the safety market is shaping up.  Justin Simmons recently became the NFL’s highest-paid safety, signing a four-year, $61 million deal to stay with the Broncos.

Maye has 266 tackles, six interceptions, four forced fumbles, 2.5 sacks and one fumble recovery in 54 career games. He took over as the lead-dog at safety for the Jets after disgruntled Jamal Adams was traded to the Seahawks in July of 2020.

Arriving as a second round pick in 2017, Maye and long snapper Thomas Hennessy are now the longest-tenured players on the Jets roster.  Maye is the only Jets player still on the roster from the 2017 draft class.  Linebacker Jordan Jenkins, the last remaining player from the 2016 draft class, is gone, signing a two-year deal worth $6 million on Saturday with the Texans. Jenkins had a combined 15 sacks in 2018 and 2019 but only two sacks in 12 games in 2021.
