The Bears will likely move on from Matt Nagy as head coach following the end of the season, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Though the organization still plans to hold discussions once the season ends, Nagy’s ouster is expected. The fourth-year coach holds a 33-30 record going into Sunday’s game against the Giants, with poor results following a playoff berth in his first year on the job.
Nagy, 43, has reportedly kept his focus on this season, understanding that’s the most he can do about the situation. But with the Bears at 5-10 after two disappointing 8-8 seasons, the writing is on the wall.
Nagy told reporters on Monday that he assumed he would coach out the season.
The former Chiefs offensive coordinator struggled to develop Mitch Trubisky before the team moved on to Justin Fields this year. The Ohio State product has struggled, with seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
The Bears are expected to fire head coach Matt Nagy after the season. APAfter defeating the Seahawks last week, Nagy said he was focused on evaluating effort level from players.
“You can always judge effort,” he told reporters Monday. “We saw that [Sunday]. … You value that. It states to who the players are in this building. They deserve that and they deserve to have the feeling to win. It’s been a little while.
“When you get a chance to win, you’ve got to really enjoy it. And for me personally, I’m just really happy for the players.”
Chicago would end up being the third NFL team looking for a new head coach following the Jaguars and Raiders, who fired their coaches, Urban Meyer and Jon Gruden, respectively, midseason. There are also questions surrounding the Broncos’ Vic Fangio and the Vikings’ Mike Zimmer.
