The Jets’ injury list grew longer Wednesday with rookie left tackle Mekhi Becton’s addition.
Becton was limited in practice after suffering a knee injury during Sunday’s loss to the Bills. Coach Adam Gase said Becton injured the knee in the middle of the game but did not want to come out.
“I’m not surprised,” Gase said. “I mean he’s all football, he’s tough. That group’s tight. Those guys don’t want to let each other down. To me, it would take a lot for one of those guys to miss a game.”
The fact that Becton is practicing at all indicates the injury is not serious. Becton had a strong debut in Buffalo and has a massive challenge this week against the 49ers and their star pass rusher, Nick Bosa.
“We’re going to be careful here today and see how he feels afterwards,” Gase said.
Gase explained why the team decided to place RB Le’Veon Bell on injured reserve Tuesday. Bell injured his hamstring Sunday and now will be out at least three games.
“It’s just the time frame,” Gase said. “I’m always going to give him the benefit of the doubt, just knowing the kind of shape he’s in, his ability to play through pain. I mean, I’ve seen it, the guy’s got pretty high pain threshold. I mean, that was an ugly play. He tried to gut it out. Like I said, I wish I would have took him out at halftime, but, you know, he’s a hard one to convince if that’s the right move and, you know, if we just feel like giving him that time will be beneficial to him.”
CB Pierre Desir was benched in the second quarter Sunday after committing two penalties and allowing a touchdown. The Jets signed him to a one-year, $3.75 million deal this offseason. It was not the start he hoped for.
“I felt that there’s some things that I need to work on,” Desir said. “This week is a new week. I’ve just got to get better and prepare for San Francisco.”
The Jets could turn to Nate Hairston or Quincy Wilson to start in place of Desir if they do not put him back in the starting lineup.
RB La’Mical Perine (ankle) did not practice. In addition to Becton, WR Jamison Crowder (hamstring), QB Joe Flacco (neck), LB Frankie Luvu (neck) and LB Avery Williamson (hamstring) were limited in practice. The 49ers placed CB Richard Sherman on the injured reserve list and also could be without All-Pro tight end George Kittle this week.
Sherman strained his calf late in Sunday’s 24-20 loss to Arizona and was placed on IR when the injury didn’t get better right way.
