A sleepover may have sealed the deal with Mike McCarthy and the Cowboys, but owner Jerry Jones appeared enamored with his new head coach from the start.
After news broke Monday about McCarthy and the Cowboys agreeing to terms, a source close to both parties told Pro Football Talk, “it was like love at first sight” between Jason Garrett’s replacement and Jones.
McCarthy, regarded as one of the top candidates in this year’s coaching carousel, met with the team Saturday, a day before the Cowboys and Garrett officially parted ways after nine-plus seasons. The former Packers coach had also spoken with the Browns and Giants about their coaching vacancies.
Jones appeared to be so smitten with McCarthy, he invited the Super Bowl-winning coach into his home.
“Once you stay at Jerry’s house, he doesn’t lose his guy,” an insider shared with ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
As for Garrett, he could be in the Giants’ future plans should the team’s meeting Tuesday with Baylor coach Matt Rhule go south. Rhule is considered to be the favorite after ownership fired Pat Shurmur last week after two seasons in New York.
