The Cowboys didn’t waste any time filling Jason Garrett’s job.

Fox Sports reported on Monday that Mike McCarthy will be hired as the team’s next head coach, one day after Garrett was officially fired.

McCarthy met with the Cowboys on Saturday, and had also interviewed with the Giants, Browns and Panthers. McCarthy was fired by the Packers near end of the 2018 season.

McCarthy, 56, had a 125-77-2 record in nearly 13 seasons as the Packers coach and led the team to the Super Bowl XLV win. He was considered, along with Baylor coach Matt Rhule, a front-runner for the Giants job.

The Cowboys had prioritized finding a veteran head coach to lead the team in the new decade and McCarthy, after a year away from the NFL, was the most popular name available. The Cowboys had also interviewed former Bengals coach Marvin Lewis for the job and had a phone call with ex-Titans coach Jeff Fisher.

McCarthy’s reputation is as a quarterback guru, having coached both Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay.

“I do think he brings a level of toughness but also a confidence that as a player, as a quarterback for him, you feel confident in the plays that he calls, that he’s going to call plays that cater more to your ability rather than maybe a previous guy he had,” Favre told SiriusXM of McCarthy last week. “So I think he’s a simple but yet confidence-building and technique-driven coach. He’ll be a good fit for any of those teams.”

That ended up being Dak Prescott and the Cowboys. Prescott has had four stellar seasons as the Cowboys quarterback, leading them to two NFC East titles. Prescott, 26, took his game to the next level in 2019, though, passing for 4,902 yards and 30 touchdowns — both career highs. Prescott is expected to get a significant raise this offseason as he and the Cowboys have been in contract negotiations.

Now they know who will be the one guiding his career.
