Nathaniel Hackett’s first season in Denver keeps getting more bizarre.

Wednesday, the Broncos’ head coach announced that Melvin Gordon would be the team’s starting running back this Sunday against the Jets. This announcement comes after Gordon was benched for Latavius Murray in Monday night’s loss to the Chargers, and proceeded to ‘like’ a number of tweets suggesting Denver should trade him.

The Broncos came into the season with high expectations after trading a package that included multiple first-round picks to the Seahawks for quarterback Russell Wilson. Instead, they are 2-4 and their season is on the brink.

In Week 1, Hackett decided to settle for a 64-yard field goal when the Broncos were trailing the Seahawks 17-16, instead of going for it on fourth-and-5. He said he regretted the decision after the game, but because kicker Brandon McManus missed the field goal.

While the Broncos won in Week 2 against the Texans, they were booed by their home fans for repeatedly messing up the clock, and failing to score touchdowns in the red zone.

The team proceeded to hire Jerry Rosburg to assist Hackett in managing the clock.

To be fair, the blame for the Broncos’ failures does not fall completely on Hackett’s shoulders. Wilson, who signed an extension that is worth nearly $50 per year, has been ineffective and robotic to the point where former Seahawks teammate Michael Robinson is forecasting a mutiny in the Denver locker room.

Wilson completed just three passes for 15 yards in the second half against the Chargers on Monday, as the offense could not stay on the field.

Wilson has reportedly been playing through a shoulder injury, and Hackett said earlier this week he also has a hamstring injury.

Nonetheless, Wilson said he plans to play against the Jets on Sunday, attributing his feeling better to perhaps having “wolverine blood” in speaking to reporters on Wednesday.
