The New Orleans Saints have been attempting to move into the top 10 of Thursday’s 2021 NFL Draft, but not necessarily for a quarterback to replace retired legend Drew Brees, according to multiple reports.

The Saints, who currently own the No. 28 pick in the first round, “actually have their sights on another position,” ESPN.com reported.

New Orleans coach Sean Payton last week identified cornerback as the spot his team must “address between now and the start of the season.” The top corners on the board – Alabama’s Patrick Surtain II and South Carolina’s Jaycee Horn — figure to be selected in that range, with Northwestern’s Greg Newsome and Virginia Tech’s Caleb Farley also potential first-round selections.

Payton also indicated last week that quarterback isn’t a priority with Taysom Hill and Jameis Winston under contract.

“One thing that I think we’ve done in the past is we’ve found somebody that we love and we’ve oftentimes made moves to go get that player or players,” GM Mickey Loomis said Wednesday. “So if that’s the definition of aggressive, then I like it.”

The Saints parted ways with former Giants cornerback Janoris Jenkins after the 2020 season; he signed with the Titans as a free agent.
