Aaron Rodgers will be on Fox during the 2021 NFL season’s opening weekend – one way or another.
The network announced its slate for Week 1 on Wednesday morning, and it scheduled two games for its afternoon slot, one of them to be “America’s Game of the Week” with Joe Buck and Troy Aikman – their top weekly broadcast duo. The first is Packers at Saints, the second Broncos at Giants.
Why is this notable? Because if Aaron Rodgers plays in 2021, it appears overwhelmingly likely that it will be for the Packers (his current team) or the Broncos (the team most often speculated as his landing spot if Green Bay is willing to trade him).
It has been widely reported that Rodgers is frustrated with the Packers, and has no desire to return to the team in 2021. Many think Rodgers has played his last down in Green Bay, and Denver has shown heavy interest in acquiring the three-time MVP.
Aaron Rodgers takes a snap against the Lions. Getty ImagesFox appears to be hedging its bets, and it wouldn’t be a shock if the network were to send Buck and Aikman to New Orleans if Rodgers stays, and New York if he leaves.
There’s also the possibility that Rodgers sits out the entire season in a stalemate with the Packers, though his teammates have dismissed that notion as unlikely. In that case, Fox would have to choose between the unappetizing combinations of Daniel Jones vs. Teddy Bridgewater/Drew Lock or Jordan Love vs. Jameis Winston/Taysom Hill.
As it stands, it seems likely that Buck and Aikman will call yet another Rodgers game Week 1.
