Home team in CAPS:
Sunday
Eagles (-5.5) over CARDINALS
So long as Jalen Hurts and Philadelphia don’t swing and sway into this one with any gross excess of overconfidence, would expect this markedly mature club to take care of business and get out of Dodge.
Giants (+8) over Packers (in London)
Another of those midmorning Sunday brunch clashes before the meat of the schedule resumes. Aaron Rodgers continues to draw support more than a little out of proportion to his prevailing effectiveness, up against Daniel Jones at QB for “visitors.”
JETS (+3) over Dolphins
This AFC divisional matchup has long been underdog-dominated, and don’t see that long-term trend realigning here. We’ve long been respectful of Dolphins’ veteran backup QB and ex-Jet Teddy Bridgewater. An Under (46) wouldn’t surprise us.
Steelers (+14) over BILLS
Given the Bills’ ability to grab the upper hand without any undue delays, will place our trust in perhaps underrated rookie Kenny Pickett, as the respected Pitt product takes charge here and competes for three-plus hours.
Kenny Pickett USA TODAY SportsFalcons (+9.5) over BUCCANEERS
Don’t doubt that Bucs will get back in the “W” saddle again off twin losses, but this number could prove a tall hill to climb against the fortified Falcons who, at this point, are undeniably improved.
Titans (-1.5) over COMMANDERS
Home field not being any great advantage here, will trust the slim road chalk against a host side that has not displayed any particular flair for taking advantage of familiar surroundings.
BROWNS (+2.5) over Chargers
Now fortified by the return of such talents as Myles Garrett and Nick Chubb, Cleveland, could well make a considerable difference against a Chargers side which has frequently underperformed vis-à-vis their basic capabilities.
Seahawks (+5.5) over SAINTS
Seattle’s defensive issues are a concern, but at least you’ve been granted a generous head start, and the distractions bedeviling the Saints yield the focus advantage to the hardworking visitors against the aches-and-pains-bedeviled hosts.
DK Metcalf APPATRIOTS (-3.5) over Lions
Detroit is a manna-from-heaven foe for the old-time class Pats. This is the kind of game in which sideline coaching can provide a considerable edge for the sharp side, and you know who that is.
Texans (+7) over JAGUARS
Jacksonville appears headed in the right direction now, and good for the Jags, but we’re not quite ready to give short shrift to what the Texans have accomplished in this series over the past decade-plus.
49ers (-6.5) over PANTHERS
Even given their appreciable head start here, not eager to sweat with the Panthers for three hours or so. San Fran is extraordinarily well-coached and has earned our respect in spades.
Jimmy Garoppolo APVIKINGS (-7.5) over Bears
You’re being asked to pay bustout retail for the Purple Gang here, but what are ya gonna do? Chicago’s issues regarding capitalizing on red-zone opportunities persist — which can very possibly result in difficulties achieving backdoor covers. Handle with care.
Cowboys (+5.5) over RAMS
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. The ’Boys have the misfortune to be in the same division as the Eagles — but that circumstance assures sustained focus on optimum performance. Foes, beware — even the Rams.
Bengals (+3.5) over RAVENS
We harbor belief that the Bengalis have built up a sufficiently large energy reserve to make a sustained game of this. Expecting a contentious effort from both sides.
Monday
CHIEFS (-7) over Raiders
Finally having had enough, the Silver and Black established a safe margin over the offensively woebegone Broncos last week. This spot represents a marked step up in class. Now, Raiders could well regress again off that win.
Last week: 9-5-1
Season: 32-27-1
