The Chicago Bears took a chance at Tuesday’s trade deadline.
The team acquired defensive end Montez Sweat from the Washington Commanders in exchange for a 2024 second-round pick.
The Bears are surprising buyers at the trade deadline, given they are currently 2-6 and near the bottom of the league.
The 27-year-old pass-rusher is in the last year of his contract and could reinvigorate a Chicago defense that struggles to get after opposing quarterbacks.
Sweat has 6.5 sacks this season and the Bears as a team have 10.5.
“Montez is a huge addition to our team,” Bears general manager Ryan Poles said. “He is not is not only a great player but a great person. We expect him to help elevate our defense.”
Poles previously traded away receiver Chase Claypool less than a year after acquiring him from the Steelers when it became obvious he wasn’t on-board with the offense.

The team also dealt away fellow pass rusher Chase Young, receiving a a compensatory third-round pick for the former first-rounder.
The trades mark a reset for the Commanders, who are under the new ownership of Josh Harris.
