The Dallas Cowboys’ bizarre coaching saga includes interest in a coach who’s been out of the league for three years.

The Cowboys, who finally formally fired Jason Garrett on Sunday before hiring Mike McCarthy on Monday, had a phone call with Jeff Fisher, according to ESPN. Fisher, who turns 62 next month, was fired by the Los Angeles Rams before the end of the 2016 season. He finished under .500 in each of his five seasons with the Rams after a 17-year run with the Oilers/Titans franchise.

Despite the phone conversation, ESPN reports Fisher’s NFL layoff worked against him with regards to scoring an in-person interview with the Cowboys. Fisher most recently worked as a consultant for the now-defunct Alliance of American Football.

Fisher won double-digit games six times with the Titans, making the playoffs in each of those six seasons. They went to the Super Bowl in the 1999 season, losing to the Rams. They never got past the Divisional Round again under Fisher.
