The Jets have signed their fifth-round pick from this year’s NFL Draft, Kentucky fullback John Conner.
Primarily a blocker, Conner finished his collegiate career with 247 yards and four touchdowns on 54 carries, and 193 yards and four touchdowns on 25 receptions.
Rex Ryan has praised Conner’s blocking during offseason workouts. His signing marks the first of the Jets’ four draft selections to get under contract.
Conner, nicknamed “The Terminator” because he shares the name of one of the main characters in the Arnold Schwarzenegger movies, played in a school-record 53 games at Kentucky. He was granted a medical hardship as a freshman in 2005 after sustaining a season-ending injury.
He is expected to back up veteran fullback Tony Richardson this season.
Cornerback Kyle Wilson, the team’s first-round pick, offensive lineman Vladimir Ducasse (second round) and running back Joe McKnight (fourth round) are unsigned.
