Elijah Moore belatedly got what he wished for, and the Jets got more ammunition for an Aaron Rodgers trade in the process.
The Jets sent Moore to the Browns along with their third-round pick in next month’s draft in exchange for Cleveland’s second-round pick, according to a source.
The Jets now own picks 42 and 43.
The question now becomes whether they will actually use both of those picks.
The Jets and the Packers are trying to hammer out a trade for quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
This gives them another second-round pick to play with.
The Jets may not have as much of a problem parting with one second-rounder if they have another one to use. It has been speculated that the Jets would give up a second-round pick this year as part of the deal.
They have six picks in the draft, including three in the top 45.
The trade came after the Jets agreed to a one-year contract with free-agent receiver Mecole Hardman, according to a source.
That signing made Moore expendable, as Hardman plays mostly in the slot, like Moore.
The Jets are trading wide receiver Elijah Moore to the Browns. Bill Kostroun for the NY PostThe Jets feel like they upgraded their team speed with the addition of Hardman, who ran a 4.33 40-yard dash coming out of Georgia in 2019.
Hardman’s contract is reportedly worth up to $6.5 million but is probably more in the $4 million-$5 million range.
The only question about Hardman is his health.
The 25-year-old speedster just underwent surgery to repair a core injury last month. He played just eight games in the regular season last year for the Chiefs.
He initially suffered the injury in Week 9 and landed on injured reserve.
The Jets selected Elijah Moore in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft. Bill Kostroun for the NY PostHe returned for the AFC Championship game but aggravated the injury and left the game.
He did not play in the Super Bowl.
The addition of Hardman continues the makeover of the wide receivers room.
The Jets signed Allen Lazard to a four-year, $44 million contract last week. They now have Lazard, Garrett Wilson and Hardman as their starting wide receivers.
Moore, 22, gets a fresh start with the Browns after a disappointing and tumultuous 2022 season. Moore caught just 37 passes for 446 yards and one touchdown last season.
In October, he requested a trade after growing frustrated with his lack of targets in the offense.
He had a blowup with former offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur in practice, and was sent home and made inactive for a game.
The Jets drafted Moore in the second round in 2021, and he showed promise as a rookie with 43 catches for 538 yards and five touchdowns in 11 games.
But he struggled to develop chemistry with quarterback Zach Wilson and seemed to play better when other quarterbacks were in the game.
The Jets and Moore seemed to be on different pages about his role during his time with the team.
Moore wanted to be used more in the slot, and the Jets used him mainly on the outside as a rookie and early last year.
Moore also wanted more routes designed for him and jet sweeps called for him. At 5-foot-10, he did not have size and did not always show elite speed.
Aaron Rodgers Getty ImagesHardman was a second-round pick in 2019 by Kansas City.
He has played 57 games, starting 26 for the Chiefs.
He has 151 catches for 2,088 yards and 16 touchdowns. He also has rushed 20 times for 125 yards and two touchdowns.
Last season, Hardman caught 25 passes for 297 yards and four touchdowns and had four carries for 31 yards and two touchdowns.
Hardman also has been a kick and punt returner and should slide into that role, with Braxton Berrios cut this month and later signing with the Dolphins.
The Jets are now waiting on Rodgers, who expressed his desire to join the team a week ago on “The Pat McAfee Show.”
The Jets and Packers are trying to work out a trade, but there is no sign of a deal coming anytime soon.
Jets general manager Joe Douglas and Packers GM Brian Gutekunst will be in Arizona next week at the same hotel for league meetings.
It is possible they could work something out there face-to-face. If not, the next big date is April 27 when the draft takes place.
If the Packers want a 2023 draft pick in the trade, something will have to be done by then.
