Robert Saleh went home with a timeout in his pocket.
The Jets coach had some questionable time-management decisions on his team’s final drive of their 20-17 loss to the Lions. The Jets got the ball with 1:49 left at their own 25 and with three timeouts. Saleh did not use his first timeout until there was 19 seconds left in the game.
He could have used it after a 10-yard completion to Garrett Wilson with 53 seconds left. Instead, he let 20 seconds tick away before the Jets ran their next play.
“I’ll look back at it,” Saleh said. “With three timeouts, I feel like anything in bounds, obviously, you can be aggressive, just trying to save as many timeouts as I can. I can probably look back at it and say we could’ve used one, for sure, but at the same time, when you have three timeouts, time is not an issue whether you use one there or not. But, yeah, I could always, in hindsight for me, call a timeout to settle the guys down. But, as far as from a time standpoint, you still have plenty of time with three timeouts.”

Saleh used his first timeout after two more plays when Zach Wilson was sacked for an 8-yard loss. He then used his second timeout with one second left to set up Greg Zuerlein’s 58-yard field goal attempt, which sailed wide left.
Jets head coach Robert Saleh looks on during a game against the Lions on Dec. 18, 2022. Bill KostrounQB Mike White will undergo a CT scan on Monday to see if his ribs have healed. The Jets fully expect that he won’t be able to play Thursday night against the Jaguars but could be surprised by the test results.
Saleh was asked if White will start Thursday if he is healthy.
“I don’t know if I’m prepared to answer that question right now,” Saleh said.
DT Quinnen Williams (calf) was inactive after the Jets had said they hoped he would be able to play.
“He’s got a chance for Thursday, but, again, we’ll see,” Saleh said. “He’s got a couple of hurdles he’s got to clear.”
Safety Lamarcus Joyner was inactive after a hip injury flared up on him Friday.
WR Denzel Mims left the game with a concussion and WR Jeff Smith left with a knee injury. That left the Jets playing with three wide receivers in the second half. WR Corey Davis (concussion) was inactive.
Hero
Lions quarterback Jared Goff wasn’t spectacular, completing 23 of 38 for 252 yards with one TD and no turnovers. But he made the play of the game, recognizing the Jets, in a Cover One, leaving tight end Brock Wright open on a fourth-and-1, completing the pass to him and watching it turn into a 51-yard game-winning TD. It was only the third TD pass Goff has thrown in a road game this season.
Zero
Whomever the Jets defender was assigned to cover Wright, head coach Robert Saleh wouldn’t divulge his name and no player in the locker room either knew of or outed. But the Jets were in man-to-man defense on the play, so someone was assigned to Wright. On the replay, the culprit looks like either safety Jordan Whitehead or linebacker Quincy Williams.
Unsung hero
Brock Wright, the Lions’ tight end who entered the game with just 13 receptions for 141 yards and a TD, sold the fake on the game-winning TD perfectly, hanging in to block for a moment and then squirting free and wide open for the 51-yard catch-and-run.
Key stat
2.3 The Jets’ yards-per-carry average (22 rushes for 50 yards) and that’s not their formula for winning games.
