The 49ers had their future figured out. Now, they’re back digging at the bottom of the bargain bin.

After losing $137 million quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo for the season to a torn ACL, the 49ers are working out multiple veterans to take his roster spot. However, longtime 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick won’t be among the options.

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters there has “not been any discussion” about bringing Kaepernick back to his former team, with the coach noting last year that the quarterback wasn’t a fit for the team’s new offensive system.

Kaepernick, who most recently played in San Francisco in 2016, and is currently suing the league for collusion to keep him off a roster because of his non-violent protests against racial injustice, played five seasons with the 49ers and twice led them to the playoffs, which included one Super Bowl appearance.

Instead, the 49ers will rely on second-year quarterback C.J. Beathard, who appeared in five games last season, and back him up with a journeyman.

Shanahan confirmed that former Texans quarterback Tom Savage will be brought in, following being cut by the Saints on Sept. 1. Former Jets quarterbacks Kellen Clemens and Matt Simms will also work out. Clemens has not started a game since 2013, and Simms has not played in the NFL since 2014. T.J Yates and former Dolphins quarterback Matt Moore have also both been extended invitations.

Who hasn’t been brought into the fold (yet) is Jay Cutler, who had retired last season before the Dolphins came calling. This offseason, he said “can’t say 100 percent” that he’s finished with football, and it bears watching whether the 12-year NFL vet can be wrangled into a 13th season.
