CHICAGO — The Vikings made the most intriguing pick of the NFL Draft by taking a sixth-round flier on German wide receiver Moritz Boehringer.

Boehringer didn’t start playing “American football” until three years ago, getting the inspiration from YouTube highlights of new teammate Adrian Peterson.

The 22-year-old Boehringer picked up the game quickly, to the point of winning the German Football League’s Rookie of the Year award last season with 70 receptions for 1,461 yards and 16 touchdowns. He’s listed at 6-foot-4, 227 pounds, and ran a 4.4 40-yard dash in workouts.

“We spend a lot of time trying to look under every rock,” Vikings general manager Rick Spielman said, via the Associated Press. “When we get a hint that someone might have the ability to play in this league, that’s our job to go out and uncover it.”
