ALBANY — You ever hear of “What have you done for me lately?” Well, Tom Coughlin sure subscribes to that sentiment.

He was asked following the morning practice what he thought of a nice down-the-field catch by rookie receiver Hakeem Nicks, a play that occurred in Friday night’s session. Coughlin scoffed. “That was yesterday,” Coughlin said.

Sure enough, Nicks was not on the field in the morning because of what Coughlin described as a “little hamstring strain.” That burned the head coach, who hates seeing players on the sideline and especially has little patience for young players expected to contribute right away missing time on the field.

After a relatively injury-free first week of camp the strains have surfaced. WR David Tyree (hip flexor) and C Shaun O’Hara (triceps) did not work.

With O’Hara on the side, the already-thin reserve center position was exposed once again. Adam Koets, who has struggled with the quarterback-center exchange, did not have any mishaps. Tutan Reyes on a shotgun snap sailed the ball over the reach of David Carr. A few plays later, Kevin Boothe out of the shotgun snapped one high and wide and all the 6-foot-3 Carr could do was barely get a hand on the ball.

Not good.

“You got some guys, here comes the pressure in the ‘A’ gap and they forget about the snap,” Coughlin said. “They got to do it so many times under pressure that it becomes automatic. We have two tall quarterbacks. The third one the tall quarterback would have needed a stepladder.”
