Odell Beckham Jr. was – and perhaps still is — hoping to be a San Francisco ex-Giant.
Two sources confirmed to Yahoo Sports the report Sunday that Beckham has told players and coaches on opposing teams to “come get me” during game-day encounters in October as a possible trade route out of Cleveland during the offseason.
The Browns played one game during that time frame against the 49ers, and one person described as someone “close to Beckham” added that the former Giants wideout holds San Fran coach Kyle Shanahan “in high esteem” while also “developing a friendship” with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
“He talks to Jimmy on and off the field,” the source said. “They have a friendship that is more than just saying hello before or after [a game]. There’s a lot of mutual respect there as football players and people — which is important [to Beckham].”
Beckham has endured a largely unproductive first season in Cleveland and confirmed Sunday that he likely will require sports hernia surgery in the offseason. He has scored just two touchdowns in 13 games, with 59 catches (tied for 32nd in the league) for 844 yards (25th).
“He’s lost,” another person close to Beckham told Yahoo. “Fame got to him, he made bad choices [and] now he has to redeem himself. And the road to redemption isn’t an easy one when you have an ego.”
The 49ers and the Rams were mentioned as potential suitors for Beckham when he still was with the Giants, who traded him to Cleveland in March for safety Jabril Peppers, a first-round pick (17th overall) and a third-round pick.
“I think he was in disbelief when it first went down,” one of the Yahoo sources said. “I mean, I think he was just pretty much stunned it happened and he’s been dealing with that adjustment and other things ever since. He’s a very emotional person I think there is just a lot going on in his head when it comes to where he’s at with his career.”
