There will likely be countless reports going back and forth regarding Aaron Rodgers’ future over the next several months, but NFL Network cited sources Sunday that the Packers are cautiously optimistic their star quarterback will return in 2022.

The organization was left with “confidence moving forward” that the three-time — and possibly four-time — league MVP will be back for an 18th season in Green Bay after Rodgers spent “a few extra days” at the team facility “huddling” with head coach Matt LaFleur “mapping out what’s next,” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported.

“Cautious optimism was the phrase, per sources, though no one wants to interfere with Rodgers’ process,” Rapoport reported. “And Packers decision makers all respect the steps he’ll take to arrive at his eventual decision.”

Rodgers concluded an eventful year with a loss last week against the 49ers in the divisional playoffs. The 10-time Pro Bowler was the subject of trade rumors last spring before returning to Green Bay, where he led the Packers to a 13-4 record in the regular season with 37 touchdowns and four interceptions.

Rodgers was also embroiled in controversy this season due to his outspoken views on COVID-19, even misleading reporters about his vaccination status.

The 38-year-old quarterback said Tuesday on the “Pat McAfee Show” that “everything definitely is on the table” as far as his future, but reiterated he doesn’t want to play next season in a rebuilding situation.

“I think some of the factors are the direction of the team and the organization, and how I feel like I fit in in the future,” Rodgers said on the show. “Mentally, do I still have the passion, the competitiveness, the desire to keep playing? I think it’s a feeling, and you just kind of know when the offseason has started.

“When you’re a hyper-competitive individual, you also dream or think about what the fairytale ending is. It doesn’t mean Super Bowl necessarily, but that’s a pretty damn good fairy tale.”
