MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Regardless of what happens in Sunday’s Super Bowl 2020, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is in line for a major payday.
Mahomes has established himself as the best quarterback in the NFL in his first two seasons as a starter. He won the MVP in 2018 and only a knee injury slowed him down this season. Still, he led the Chiefs to the Super Bowl.
Since he has completed three seasons on his rookie contract, he is eligible for an extension. Technically, the Chiefs still control his rights for another two seasons, but he has earned a new deal. He is scheduled to make only $2.7 million in 2020 and the Chiefs can exercise a fifth-year option for 2021 that would pay him about $25 million.
Chiefs owner Clark Hunt tempered expectations of getting a deal done quickly this week.
“I’ve said before that I hope Patrick is here for his entire career and that’s going to be our goal,” Hunt said. “But there will be a right time, sometime in the next 12-15 months to extend Patrick and when I say right time, I mean right time for both, the player and the club. I don’t want to say it has to necessarily be this offseason but I will say it’s a priority to get it done.”
Mahomes and his representatives surely will push to get a deal done sooner rather than later. They saw him sustain the knee injury this year and it is a reminder of how quickly things can change in the NFL.

Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson reset the bar for quarterbacks last year with a four-year, $140 million extension with a record-setting $35 million average annual value and $107 million in guaranteed money.
Mahomes will top those numbers.
One potential stumbling block is the NFL’s current collective bargaining agreement ends after the 2020 season. The Chiefs may want to wait until they see the new CBA before extending Mahomes.
There also surely will be a debate about the length of the deal. Mahomes’ agents will push for a shorter deal. If he signs a four-year contract, he would be able to sign another contract at 28 years old after the 2024 season. But the Chiefs may seek a longer commitment if they are going to make him the highest-paid player in football.
