Another veteran Patriot bites the dust.

New England released longtime kicker Stephen Gostkowski on Monday, according to the Boston Globe. The decision to release Gostkowski, who became the organization’s all-time leading scorer in 2014, will add $3,478,500 of cap space for the Patriots.

Gostkowski, 36, and his future in New England was first up in the air last offseason. Both sides ultimately agreed to a two-year, $8.5 million deal, but the four-time Pro Bowl kicker went on to miss four extra points in four games.

He then landed on the injured reserve list due to a hip issue that required surgery.

With visible holes on offense, particularly at wide receiver and tight end, it’s not surprising the Patriots released Gostkowski to reallocate their funds to problem areas.

Gostkowski, the Patriots’ fourth-round (118th-overall) pick in the 2006 NFL Draft out of the University of Memphis, was immediately challenged with succeeding legendary kicker Adam Vinatieri. But he rose to the occasion, earning a First-Team All-Pro selection in his third season.

The Baton Rouge native is just the latest big-name Patriot to depart from the team, following quarterback Tom Brady and safety Duron Harmon.

Nick Folk, an unrestricted free agent, is the only kicker left on the Patriots’ roster. Folk was signed after the release of Mike Nugent in October 2019 and was re-signed in December.
