The Patriots are starting to plan for life after Tom Brady.
New England selected Auburn quarter Jarrett Stidham with the 133th overall pick in the fourth round of the NFL draft on Saturday in Nashville. The selection of Stidham is the highest the Patriots have taken a quarterback in the draft since the picked Jacoby Brissett in the third round in 2016.
The 41-year-old Brady is coming off winning his sixth Super Bowl and has shown no signs of slowing down. He has expressed the desire to play into his 40s. For now, Stidham will likely compete for the backup job with the 33-year-old Brian Hoyer.
The 6-foot-2, 218-pound Stidham was unable to build off a superb 2017 when he threw for 3,158 yards, 18 touchdowns and six interceptions and led Auburn to a win over Alabama in the Iron Bowl. This past season as a junior he threw for 2,794 yards, 18 touchdowns, and five interceptions as Auburn went 8-5.
