The mystery of who will call offensive plays for the Patriots may soon be over.

Former Lions head coach Matt Patricia — who spent the 2021 season as a senior advisor to head coach Bill Belichick in New England — has become an early favorite to land the job, according to The Athletic.

Although Belichick has yet to announce his decision about who will call offensive plays for New England, “it’s trending in Patricia’s direction,” a source said, adding the latter’s workload this spring has indicated that he is the favorite to take on the responsibility.

Patricia and Joe Judge — the former Giants coach who joined Belichick’s staff as an offensive assistant in February — are each preparing for the possibility of calling offensive plays following the departure of longtime offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, who is now the head coach of the Raiders.

Belichick could take on the additional task of calling offensive plays, or it’s possible he could delegate the job to both Patricia and Judge — similar to his son Steve Belichick and Jerod Mayo on the defensive end.

Last month, Judge said he was working with Mac Jones and the quarterbacks. Meanwhile, Patricia said he was working with the offensive line.

Patricia spent three seasons as the Lions’ head coach before he rejoined Belichick’s staff last year. He began his coaching career with the Patriots as an offensive coaching assistant under Belichick in 2004, the same year the team won its third championship in Super Bowl 39. Patricia eventually switched over to the defense in 2006 and spent 12 years on that side of the ball.

The 2022 season also marks Judge’s second act with the Patriots. He previously served as the special teams coordinator from 2012 to 2019 before becoming the Giants’ head coach. Judge rejoined Belichick’s staff a month after being fired by the Giants in January following two seasons at the helm.

The Patriots are set to begin their three-day mandatory minicamp Tuesday at Gillette Stadium, with the program concluding Thursday.
