DENVER — The Patriots are going to the Super Bowl.
For the better part of the 2000s, that news would have been met with a yawn and the question, “So, what else is new?’’
Those were the Tom Brady-Bill Belichick Patriots that went to nine Super Bowls and won six of them, dating back to 2001.
But this is a new era in New England — a remarkable new era considering that this franchise went a combined 4-26 in 2023 and 2024 before hiring head coach Mike Vrabel prior to this season.
With these Patriots, it isn’t only about the legendary coach and quarterback anymore.
With these Patriots,It takes everyone.

APAnd it took everyone from every corner of the roster to overcome and outlast the No. 1 seed Broncos 10-7 in Sunday’s AFC Championship game in conditions that turned blizzardy after halftime, making Empower Field at Mile High look like a winter wonderland.
Now, the 17-3 Patriots will play the Seahawks, who defeated the Rams in Sunday’s NFC Championship game, in Super Bowl LX on Feb. 8 at Levi’s Stadium.
“You have to believe things … sometimes before you can see them,’’ Vrabel said. “We’ve got a great group of guys and they continue to believe in the things that we did. They formed and created an identity, and they tried to protect it.’’
Patriots safety Jaylinn Hawkins called the story the Patriots are authoring “like a movie, man. It’s something that’s just priceless.’’
The win was the Patriots’ ninth on the road without a loss, a first in NFL history.

After going 4-13 last season, the Patriots became the sixth team to reach the Super Bowl after having five or fewer wins the previous year.
The last team to win a Super Bowl the year after winning five or fewer games the previous season?
The 2001 Patriots in Brady’s first season as the New England starter.
This one — “a street fight,’’ current Patriots (and former Jet) right tackle Morgan Moses called it — took everyone for New England, right down to a Jets castoff (of course) named Leonard Taylor III.
Just three months after the Jets released him, Taylor, who was signed by the Patriots, was elevated from the practice squad late in the season.

“The ultimate goal is to get to the Super Bowl and this team fell short,’’ Lutz said. “Unfortunately, I played a part in that.’’
So, too, did Taylor.
“I just threw my hands up in the air and it happened,’’ he said. “God blessed me to go out there and help the team. I started with the Jets at first and there were a lot of ups and downs there. It’s amazing to go from a losing team to a winning team.’’
Patriots quarterback Drake Maye, an MVP candidate, passed for only 55 net yards, though he ran for 61.
But the best thing Maye did was not turn the ball over, a concern entering the game after he fumbled six times and threw two interceptions in the previous two playoff games.
Broncos quarterback Jarrett Stidham (8) runs against the Patriots during the second half of the AFC Championship game on Jan. 25, 2026. APSometimes, in conditions like Sunday’s second half, protecting the ball is more important than throwing TD passes.
Also important are sound coaching decisions.
And the Patriots got an assist from Denver head coach Sean Payton. He went from coaching the game of his life with a backup quarterback in Jarrett Stidham, who hadn’t thrown an NFL pass since 2023, to making one of the worst coaching decisions of his career.
With the Broncos leading 7-0 on a Stidham first-quarter TD pass to Courtland Sutton and the Patriots offense running in water and thirsting for a first down, Payton opted to go for it on fourth-and-1 from the New England 14-yard line.
Instead of kicking a chip-shot field goal to go up 10-0 in what was clearly going to be a defensive struggle, Payton’s fourth-down play, a rollout by Stidham, was smothered.
The poor decision and worse call gave the Patriots life and the Broncos were dead offensively the rest of the game.

Getty Images“The feeling was, ‘Man, let’s be aggressive to get up 14,’ ’’ Payton said later. “It felt like we had a good call. There are always regrets, yes.So, yes, there’ll always be second thoughts.”
Denver’s next possession ended in disaster when Stidham, under heavy pressure, threw a backward pass that was recovered by New England’s Elijah Ponder at the Broncos 12-yard line with 2:52 remaining in the first half.
Two plays later, the Patriots tied the game at 7-7 on a 6-yard Maye keeper with 2:10 left.
The Patriots took the 10-7 lead — all they needed — with the first possession of the second half. And what a possession it was — 16 plays, 64 yards that chewed 9:31 off the clock.
It ended in a 23-yard field goal by Andy Borregales with 5:29 remaining in the third quarter. That was all the Patriots needed. as their defense suffocated the Broncos.“It took everybody.’’
“How about our defense?’’ Maye said. “We (the offense) are gonna play better. We’ve got to go win one more. We’ve got more work to do. I’m so proud of this team.
