Authorities are reopening the child abuse case against Chiefs receiver Tyreek Hill after an explosive audiotape was released Thursday night in which he and his fiancée discuss injuries suffered by their three-year-old son.
Prosecutors had announced on Wednesday that a crime had been committed but no charges had been filed against Hill or fiancée Crystal Espinal because it could not be determined how the child had suffered a broken arm and other injuries.
In the audiotape released by KCTV, Espinal can be heard telling Hill that her son told her “Daddy did it.” She also accused Hill of punching his son and using a belt on him. When she told Hill that their son is “terrified” of him, the Chiefs star replied, “you need to be terrified of me, too, dumb (b-tch).”
Overland Park police also were called to the home of Hill and Espinal on Thursday night after receiving an anonymous tip from someone concerned about Espinal’s safety. According to reports, Espinal was OK and officers remained at the house for a short time, The audio recording likely is central to the new evidence officials will use in reopening the case.
The Chiefs, who cut ties with running back Kareem Hunt last season after a video emerged of him punching and kicking a woman, announced Thursday night that Hill has been banned from all team activities pending investigation by the team and the NFL. Kansas City coach Andy Reid told reporters said Friday that he was aware the criminal case had been reopened, but he declined further comment.
