One hundred million dollars doesn’t go as far as it used to.
For the Raiders, it hasn’t even bought a playoff spot.
They gave Jon Gruden a ridiculous 10-year, $100 million contract hoping he would lead back to relevancy. And while the franchise has taken steps forward since his hiring in 2018, it has also collapsed now in consecutive seasons, and Gruden owns an 18-28 record in his second stint with the Raiders.
An impressive 6-3 start has dissolved into a 7-7 record, four losses in five that have ruined the Raiders’ playoff hopes. The only win in that stretch was their miracle win over the Jets, thanks to Gregg Williams’ dreadful play call.
The latest setback came Thursday night in a 30-27 loss to the going-nowhere Chargers. During this collapse, they were also destroyed by the four-win Falcons.
“It’s on me,” Gruden said afterwards. “It was tough. I’m really proud of our coaches and our players. We did a lot of good things tonight. But you’ve got to win these tight games. And often times, that’s a reflection on the head coach.”
Jon Gruden APIt was eerily similar to last year, when the Raiders were 6-4 and thinking playoff before losing five of their last six games to finish 7-9.
Ironically, when Gruden took the job, he told USA Today Sports: “If I can’t get it done, I’m not going to take their money.”
The Raiders shouldn’t forget that quote.
