“Black Monday,” the day following the NFL regular season, usually is when teams fire their coaches.

But the Redskins are hoping they can hire Ron Rivera on the infamous day when they are scheduled to meet with the former Panthers head coach, according to the Washington Post.

Washington, which axed Jay Gruden in October, reportedly is trying to move quickly to ensure that other teams don’t get a chance to talk to Rivera, considered by many to be among the top coaching candidates available.

It is possible the Redskins (3-13) are afraid of the Giants, who are expected to fire Pat Shurmur following a 4-12 season.

Rivera previously worked with current Giants GM Dave Gettleman in Carolina, and the two won three NFC South titles together in five seasons.

Rivera was fired earlier this season with Carolina 5-7 and losers of four straight, but the 57-year-old has made it clear he wants to continue coaching.

The Redskins turned to Bill Callahan as their interim head coach following the firing of Gruden.
